**In short:** Unplug the Airwrap and let everything cool. Pull hair out of brush bristles with a comb, wipe barrels and air slots with a dry or slightly damp microfibre cloth, and clear dust from vents with a soft dry brush. Let any damp parts dry fully before refitting. Never put attachments in water or a dishwasher unless Dyson says your model allows it.

Most people clean the Airwrap's filter but forget the attachments. Over time, brushes fill with hair, barrels pick up a film of hairspray and heat protectant, and the air slots collect dust. That build-up can reduce airflow, make curls less even and leave a smell when the tool heats up. Cleaning the attachments takes about ten minutes and needs nothing more than a comb, a soft brush and a cloth. This guide covers each type of attachment.

## Before you start

- Switch off, unplug and let the Airwrap and attachments cool completely.
- Remove all attachments from the handle.
- Have ready: a wide-tooth comb or pick, a soft dry brush (the Dyson cleaning brush or a clean make-up brush), a microfibre cloth and a little warm water.
- Check your manual for any model-specific instructions.

Note: Do not submerge attachments or the handle in water, and do not use solvents, abrasive pads or a dishwasher unless Dyson's instructions for your model allow it.

## Cleaning the brushes

Do this after every few uses for the round volumising brush and the smoothing brushes, as hair wraps tightly around bristles and blocks airflow from the vents between them. The anti-snag loop brush on newer models is easier to clear but still traps short hairs at the base.

1. Run a wide-tooth comb through the bristles from the base outwards to lift out hair.
2. Pull the loosened hair away by hand. A tail comb helps hook out strands near the base.
3. Brush the bristles with a soft dry brush to remove dust and flakes.
4. Wipe the brush body with a barely damp microfibre cloth to remove product film.
5. Leave to air-dry fully before refitting.

## Cleaning the curling barrels

Barrels collect a sticky film from styling products. Wipe the outer surface with a microfibre cloth dampened with warm water, then dry it with a clean cloth. Pay attention to the air slots: use a soft dry brush to sweep dust and lint out of them, working along the slot rather than poking into it.

Check the base of each barrel, where it clips onto the handle, for hair caught in the joint. A barrel that does not sit flush can affect airflow and how the tool recognises it. If curls have become uneven, our guide to [why an Airwrap is not curling](https://blowandbarrel.co.uk/blog/dyson-airwrap-not-curling) covers other causes.

## Dryer, smoothing and straightener attachments

The pre-styling dryer and the fast dryer attachments mostly need their outlets brushed clear of dust and the outside wiped. On the Co-anda 2x, the air straightener has aerothermal plates; wipe them only when fully cool with a dry or slightly damp soft cloth, and avoid anything that could scratch the surface.

The smoothing dryer and Airsmooth-style attachments have fine slots that trap fluff; a soft brush is the best tool. Never use pins or cocktail sticks to poke into slots, as they can damage internal parts or leave debris inside.

## Do not forget the filter

The filter in the handle matters more for performance than any attachment. A clogged filter restricts airflow, makes the tool run hot and can cause cut-outs and flashing lights. Clean it at least once a week if you use the Airwrap daily. Our step-by-step guide to [cleaning the Airwrap filter](https://blowandbarrel.co.uk/blog/how-to-clean-dyson-airwrap-filter) shows how to remove the cage and use the cleaning brush.

If lights flash even after cleaning, see [what the Airwrap's flashing lights mean](https://blowandbarrel.co.uk/blog/dyson-airwrap-flashing-light).

## A simple cleaning schedule

Heavier product users should clean more often. Store attachments in the case so they do not gather dust, and see our guide on [how to store a hair dryer and styler](https://blowandbarrel.co.uk/blog/how-to-store-a-hair-dryer).

| Part | How often | How |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Brush bristles | Every 2 to 3 uses | Comb out hair, brush off dust |
| Barrel surfaces | Weekly | Wipe with a damp cloth, dry |
| Air slots | Weekly | Soft dry brush |
| Filter | Weekly | Cleaning brush, per manual |
| Storage case | Monthly | Shake out and wipe |

## Frequently asked questions

**Can I wash Airwrap brushes in water?** Do not submerge them unless Dyson's instructions for your model say you can. Wipe with a damp cloth and let them dry fully.

**What is the best tool for cleaning Airwrap slots?** A soft dry brush, such as the cleaning brush Dyson supplies or a clean make-up brush. Avoid pins and sharp objects.

**Why does my Airwrap smell when it heats up?** Product build-up and dust on attachments and the filter can give off a smell when heated. Clean everything; if a burning smell continues, stop using it and contact Dyson.

**Can I buy replacement Airwrap attachments?** Dyson sells many attachments separately. Check compatibility with your model before buying.
