Noise is one of the most common complaints about hair dryers, whether you share a flat, have a baby asleep next door or simply dislike the roar. Brands increasingly advertise quiet operation, but few give comparable figures. This guide explains how loudness is measured, what affects how a dryer sounds, why two dryers with similar decibel numbers can sound very different, and what to look for if you want a quieter one.

How decibels work

Sound level is measured in decibels, usually A-weighted, written dB(A), which adjusts for how human hearing responds to different frequencies. The scale is logarithmic. An increase of about 10 dB is generally perceived as roughly twice as loud, and an increase of 3 dB is a doubling of sound energy. So a dryer that is a few decibels quieter can sound noticeably calmer.

Measurements depend heavily on distance and setting. A figure taken at 1 m on the lowest setting is not comparable with one taken at 30 cm on the highest. That is why brand claims are hard to compare unless they state how they were measured.

What makes a dryer loud

  • Motor type: traditional AC motors rumble; brushless digital motors whine at a higher pitch.
  • Fan design: blade shape and number affect both volume and tone.
  • Airflow setting: higher speed is louder on every dryer.
  • Nozzle and attachments: narrow nozzles can add a hiss; diffusers spread air and can sound softer.
  • Filter condition: a clogged filter makes the motor strain and can change the sound.
  • Build quality: loose parts rattle and vibrate.

Pitch: why high-speed dryers sound different

High-speed dryers such as the Dyson Supersonic spin small motors very fast, around 110,000 rpm according to Dyson's Origin listing. That shifts much of the noise to higher frequencies. Some high frequencies are beyond human hearing, but what remains can sound like a whine. Dyson has said its designs aim to push part of the motor sound outside the audible range.

Whether you find that pleasant is personal. Some people find a lower rumble less irritating than a high whine at the same decibel level; others the opposite. If possible, listen to a dryer before you buy, or watch a video recorded in a quiet room, keeping in mind that recordings distort sound.

What to look for in a quieter dryer

Look for dryers that state low noise as a design aim, such as models with silencers or noise-reduction features, and check whether any decibel figure gives distance and setting. Our quiet hair dryer guide compares models from Parlux, ghd, Laifen, Elchim and Dyson that make low-noise claims in their listings.

Some listings mention specific features: the Parlux Digitalyon in our guides has a Melody Silencer version, the Parlux Alyon has a low-noise aim, and ghd says the Helios has a low sound level. Weight and comfort matter too if you dry for a long time; see our lightweight dryer guide.

Ways to make any dryer quieter

Our guide to drying hair faster helps cut the total time the dryer runs, which is often the most effective way to reduce disturbance.

  • Rough-dry on medium speed rather than maximum; it is quieter and still effective after good towel drying.
  • Clean the filter so the motor is not straining.
  • Use a diffuser for curls, which spreads the airflow.
  • Dry in a carpeted room rather than a tiled bathroom, which reflects sound.
  • Shut the door and keep the dryer pointed away from shared walls.

Note:Long, regular exposure to loud noise close to the ears can affect hearing. If you use a dryer for long periods, choose lower settings where possible.

Are ionic dryers quieter?

Ionic technology is about reducing static and frizz, not noise. Some ionic dryers are quiet and some are not; it depends on the motor and fan. Our ionic hair dryer explainer covers what ionic actually does.

Similarly, higher wattage does not mean a louder dryer by itself. Noise comes mostly from the motor and airflow, not the heater. A 2,200 W dryer with a well-designed fan can be quieter than a 1,600 W one.

Frequently asked questions

How loud is a typical hair dryer? It varies widely by model, setting and distance. Dryers are among the louder household appliances, and brand figures are only comparable when they state how they were measured.

Is the Dyson Supersonic quiet? Dyson designed it to shift motor noise to higher frequencies. Many people find it quieter overall, but the higher pitch does not suit everyone.

Why does my dryer sound louder than before? A clogged filter, worn motor bearings or loose parts can change the sound. Clean the filter; if it grinds or rattles, stop using it.

Can I use a hair dryer near a sleeping baby? Use the lowest effective setting, close the door and keep distance. Some parents use recorded dryer sound as white noise, but never leave a dryer running unattended.
