The Parlux 385 PowerLight is a compact professional dryer that has been a salon fixture for years. It suits people who blow-dry every day and want genuine salon power in a smaller, lighter body than most 2,000 W plus dryers. Its standout is the balance of power and weight: 2,150 W from a dryer Parlux says weighs just 445 g.

Our take

Power and airflow numbers

Parlux gives real figures, which many brands do not. The motor is rated at 2,150 W and the airflow at 79 cubic metres per hour. Parlux describes the 385 as smaller, quieter and more powerful than before, and says it is the second lightest model in its range.

For comparison, the Parlux Digitalyon lists 88 m3/h and the Alyon 84 m3/h, so the 385 sits a little below its siblings on airflow while being lighter in the hand.

Controls and cable

Three temperature settings and two speed settings sit on two low-profile switches, and there is an instant cold shot button. The cable is a 3 m professional cord, long enough to move around a chair or reach a socket away from the mirror.

Ceramic and ionic technology is listed for holding moisture and a glossy finish, and an acoustic silencing system is designed to keep noise down.

In the box and what is missing

Two concentrator styling nozzles come with the dryer. There is no diffuser, so curly hair owners would need to buy one separately. The specs list an item weight of 880 g, which differs from the 445 g in the bullets and probably reflects packaging. Warranty terms are not stated.

If you need a diffuser for curls, Parlux sells the Alyon with its Magic Sense diffuser as a gift set, which is worth comparing before adding a separate accessory to the 385.

Where it fits among professional dryers

The Parlux Digitalyon is the step up, with 2,400 W, 88 m3/h, four temperatures and a 3.3 m cable. The ghd Helios matches the 3 m cable at 2,200 W but does not publish airflow. The Elchim Anemos is lighter again at 290 g with a stated 1,000 L/min, but lists no settings or nozzles. The 385 is the traditional choice: proven, light and simple.

Verdict

Choose the Parlux 385 PowerLight if you want a light, high-wattage salon dryer with a long cable and two nozzles, and do not need a diffuser or smart features. If you want the most airflow, the Parlux Digitalyon is worth the step up, and for curls look at a set with a diffuser.
