The Supersonic Travel is Dyson's answer to a question owners kept asking: can I take the Supersonic on holiday without a converter? It is built for frequent travellers and for anyone with short hair who wants a tiny, quick dryer at home. What sets it apart is the combination of a 330 g body with voltage that adapts to the country you are in.

Our take

Size, weight and power

Dyson says the Travel is 32% smaller and 25% lighter than the full-size Supersonic, and the listed weight is 330 g. Power is rated at 1,220 W, a clear step down from the 1,600 W of the standard Supersonic. Dyson describes it as ultra-lightweight but powerful and still mighty, but gives no motor speed or airflow figures for this model.

For short or medium hair the lower wattage is unlikely to matter much. For long, thick hair, expect a slower dry than a full-size dryer.

Using it abroad

The listing states the voltage adapts to your destination, so it works anywhere in the world without compromising on performance. That removes the need for a voltage converter, though you will still need a plug adaptor for sockets outside the UK.

Intelligent heat control is listed to protect hair from extreme heat, and Dyson quotes 138% more shine, with a footnote on the listing.

Attachments and sharing

Only a concentrator comes in the box. The interesting part is compatibility: Dyson says it is the only travel blow dryer that can share attachments with your existing Dyson Supersonic. If you already own a diffuser or smoothing nozzle, you can pack it with the Travel.

The listing does not give the number of heat or speed settings, the cable length or warranty details for this model.

How it stacks up

The Shark SpeedStyle Pro FLEX folds in half and brings four attachments including a diffuser, but weighs 680 g and does not mention voltage. The Panasonic EH-NA7M folds and weighs 490 g, with more wattage, but again says nothing about overseas voltage. The Dyson Airsmooth also handles any voltage but is a brush rather than a dryer. If you travel abroad often, the Travel's voltage support is the deciding factor.

Verdict

Buy the Dyson Supersonic Travel if you fly often, want the lightest premium dryer and already own Supersonic attachments to pair with it. If you mostly travel within the UK and want a diffuser in the box or more power, the Shark SpeedStyle Pro FLEX or Panasonic EH-NA7M offers more for the bag space.
