Dyson Airsmooth: stretches curls and coils

The Dyson Airsmooth is a hot air brush rather than a multi-styler, and that focus is its strength for short hair. It dries, stretches, smooths and shapes from wet in one pass, using a teardrop-shaped head that Dyson says reaches the roots easily. With no barrels or attachments to swap, it suits bobs, lobs and pixie cuts that need smoothing and lift more than curls.

In its favour
- The listing names stretching and smoothing curls and coils as a use.
- Anti-snag bristles aim to reduce snagging and breakage.
- Four heat settings and universal voltage are listed.
Good to know
- There is no diffuser, so it does not suit wash and go curl definition.
- At 1,080 W it is the least powerful tool here for rough drying.
Our take
Teardrop head and anti-snag bristles
Dyson describes the teardrop shape as giving easy root access, so you can smooth close to the scalp and then glide to the ends. That shape also helps around the back and crown, which are awkward spots with a round brush. Anti-snag bristles are designed to release hair easily, reducing snagging, frizz and breakage.
In a Dyson consumer test of 104 participants, 95% reported a snag-free session; that comparison was against participants' existing hot air brushes.
Heat control, power and weight
A glass bead thermistor measures airflow temperature over 20 times per second to avoid heat damage. The spec table gives 1,080 W, three speeds and four settings. Dyson states 580 g with the motor in the handle for balance, though the spec table lists 620 g, possibly including the bristle protector.
Several speed and smoothness claims are footnoted against the top selling hot air brush by sales volume, so they are Dyson's own market comparisons.
Travel and everyday use
Universal voltage is a notable extra: Dyson says the Airsmooth adapts automatically wherever you are, so it can go abroad without a converter. A bristle protector is included for packing. Dyson lists straight, wavy, curly and coily hair as suitable, and the MyDyson app offers tutorials. Because there are no attachments to change, the Airsmooth is also quick to put away, which suits rushed mornings. It will not curl hair, though, so anyone wanting defined ringlets needs a different tool.
Airsmooth against the ghd Duet Blowdry and Airwrap i.d.
The ghd Duet Blowdry uses heated bristles and an elliptical barrel for volume at the root, with temperature checked 400 times per second. The Dyson Airwrap i.d. adds a conical barrel and curl sequence for those who want curls on short hair. The Airsmooth is the simplest of the three for straight-to-sleek results.
Verdict
Buy the Airsmooth if you have short to mid-length hair and want one brush that dries and smooths from wet, especially if you travel. If you want root volume from heated bristles, compare the ghd Duet Blowdry, and if curls matter, the Dyson Airwrap i.d. is the better tool.
