In short
Switch off, unplug and let the FlexStyle cool. Remove the filter cap at the back of the handle, usually by twisting it, then brush lint and hair off the mesh with a soft, dry brush. Check the intake is clear, refit the cap until it locks and test it. Clean it whenever airflow drops or the tool pauses, and regularly in between. Follow Shark's manual for your model.

The Shark FlexStyle draws air in through a filter at the rear of the handle. That filter traps lint, dust and hair before they reach the motor. As it fills, airflow falls, curls take longer to set and the FlexStyle may get hot and pause to protect itself. A clean filter keeps it working as designed. This guide covers the general steps, how often to clean and what to do if problems continue. Shark's design can vary between bundles and editions, so check the manual for your model.
What you need
Some Shark filters can be rinsed and some cannot. Only use water if your manual says it is safe, and then let the filter dry completely before refitting.
- A soft, dry brush, such as a clean old toothbrush.
- A dry, lint-free cloth.
- The Shark manual or Shark's online support page for your model.
Step by step: cleaning the filter
If the cap is stiff, do not use tools to lever it off. Check the manual for the unlock direction and any release tab. Hair wound tightly into the mesh can be teased out gently with your fingers; take care not to tear or stretch the mesh, as a damaged filter lets debris reach the motor.
Make a habit of looking at the filter whenever you put the FlexStyle away. A visible layer of grey lint is a sign it is time to clean.
- 1
Switch off, unplug and let the FlexStyle cool fully.
- 2
Hold the handle and locate the filter cap at the rear, where the cable enters.
- 3
Twist the cap to unlock it and pull it off, as shown in your manual.
- 4
Look at the mesh for lint, hair and dust.
- 5
Brush the mesh gently with a soft, dry brush to lift the debris.
- 6
Wipe the cap and the area around the intake with a dry cloth.
- 7
If your manual allows rinsing, rinse and leave to dry fully before refitting.
- 8
Refit the cap and twist until it locks in place.
- 9
Plug in and test on a low setting.
Note:Always unplug the FlexStyle before removing the filter. Never run it without the filter fitted, and never refit a wet filter.
How often to clean it
These are rough guides only. Shark's manual gives the recommended interval. Hairspray and dry shampoo used nearby can add residue, so check more often if you use them in the same room.

| Daily styling | Weekly |
| A few times a week | Every two to four weeks |
| After a pause or cut-out | Straight away |
| Airflow feels weaker | Straight away |
If it still pauses or flashes
The FlexStyle has thermal protection. If it overheats, it pauses or switches off until it cools. A blocked filter is the most common reason, but it is not the only one. Check that the attachment is clicked fully home and its air slots are clear, and that the cable is not damaged.
Flashing lights can mean different things on different models. Our FlexStyle troubleshooting guide covers the common patterns, and Shark's manual lists what the lights mean on your version. If problems continue after cleaning, contact Shark; the listings state a two-year guarantee on registration in the UK and Ireland.
Cleaning the attachments
The Auto-Wrap curlers, brushes and diffuser collect hair and product. After they cool, pull trapped hair from bristles and wipe barrels with a dry cloth. Keep the air slots on the curlers clear, as blocked slots weaken the Coanda wrap and make curls harder to form.
Store attachments in the case or bag that came with your bundle to keep dust out. For styling tips, read how to use the Shark FlexStyle. For a comparison of Shark's range, see Shark stylers compared.
Why the filter matters
Strong, steady airflow is what makes the FlexStyle dry and curl. A clogged filter means less air over the heater, so the temperature rises and thermal protection kicks in. It also weakens the wrap on the curlers. Regular cleaning keeps drying times down and helps avoid pauses mid-style.
