The Shark FlexStyle is a dryer and an air styler in one body, with a hinge that turns the handle into a straight wand and a set of attachments that click onto the head. That design is clever, but it adds a few things that can go wrong: filter warnings, a styler that stops mid-curl and attachments that refuse to lock. This guide covers the common problems in the order worth checking, with a reminder to use your manual for the model-specific light codes.

Quick fault finder

Start by matching what you see to the likely cause. Most fixes take a few minutes and need nothing more than a soft brush.

What the lights usually mean

Shark uses lights on the handle to show heat and speed settings, and on many of its hair tools a flashing or coloured light also warns that the filter needs attention. The exact meaning depends on the model and edition, and Shark has changed details between FlexStyle versions, so treat any general guide with caution and check the manual that came with yours.

If a warning light appears, the first move is always to switch off, unplug and clean the filter. If the light keeps flashing after a thorough clean and a cool-down, contact Shark support with the model number, which is printed on the handle or the box.

Cleaning the filter

The filter sits at the end of the handle, where the air is drawn in. Lint, dust and hair product build up on the mesh, and once the airflow drops the FlexStyle protects itself by reducing heat or stopping. Cleaning it regularly is the single best thing you can do to keep the styler working well.

Our full walkthrough is in how to clean the Shark FlexStyle filter. In short:

  1. 1

Switch off, unplug and let the styler cool.

  2. 2

Twist or slide off the filter cap as shown in the manual.

  3. 3

Brush lint off the mesh with the supplied brush or a soft, dry brush.

  4. 4

Wipe the cap with a dry cloth; never rinse electrical parts.

  5. 5

Refit the cap until it locks, then test on a low setting.

Why it pauses or cuts out mid-style

If the FlexStyle stops partway through a curl and starts again after a short wait, it is almost always a heat issue caused by restricted airflow. A clogged filter is the main suspect, but long hair hanging over the intake, a hand wrapped around the end of the handle or a towel draped nearby can all do the same.

Some FlexStyle editions also have an airflow pause button or a cool-shot function. On the IonCurl, for example, Shark describes an AirSet button that pauses airflow with a double tap. If you press it by accident while styling, it can look like the styler has cut out. Check whether the lights are still on before assuming a fault.

Note:Unplug before cleaning or fitting attachments. If the cable is damaged, the plug is cracked or you notice a burning smell, stop using the styler and contact Shark. Do not open the body.

Attachments that will not click in

FlexStyle attachments fit onto the head with a firm push and, on some, a small twist. If one keeps falling off, check that the head and the attachment are free of hair and product, line up the markings and push until you feel or hear it lock. Attachments should not wobble once fitted.

Also check the hinge. The FlexStyle body rotates between dryer and styler positions, and it should lock firmly in both. If the hinge feels loose or will not hold, or an attachment's locking tab is cracked, contact Shark for a replacement part rather than forcing it. For help with technique, see how to use the Shark FlexStyle.

Curls that will not form

If the Coanda curlers will not pick up hair, the cause is usually technique rather than a fault. Hair that is soaking wet is too heavy to wrap, so rough-dry it until it is damp, not wet. Use sections no wider than the curler, hold the tip near the barrel and let the air pull it round.

Each curler is set for a direction, so check which way you are wrapping. If you are finding the learning curve steep, our Shark hair stylers compared guide explains which bundles suit which hair types, and our Dyson Airwrap alternatives guide covers other options.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my Shark FlexStyle keep stopping? Usually because the filter is blocked or the intake is covered, so it overheats and pauses. Clean the filter, keep the end of the handle clear and let it cool before carrying on.

Why is my Shark FlexStyle flashing? On many Shark hair tools a flashing light indicates a filter warning, but meanings vary by model. Clean the filter first and check your manual for the exact pattern.

Why will my FlexStyle attachment not stay on? It is probably not fully locked. Clean the head and attachment, line up the markings and push firmly until it clicks. If a tab is damaged, contact Shark for a replacement.

Is the Shark FlexStyle covered by a guarantee? Shark lists a 2-year guarantee upon registration for UK FlexStyle models. Register your styler with Shark and contact them if it develops a fault within that period.
