The Supersonic Origin in Nickel and Copper is the original Dyson dryer in its simplest form, sold with a single styling concentrator. It is aimed at people who want Dyson's high-pressure airflow and heat regulation for everyday blow-drying, without paying for sensors or a drawer full of attachments. Its distinguishing feature is the published motor data, which few rivals match in detail.

Our take
Published motor figures
Dyson lists the Digital Motor V9 at up to 110,000 rpm, generating 3.5 kPa of pressure and drawing 13 litres of air per second up to the amplifier. Air Multiplier technology then turns that into a high-pressure jet for drying and styling. Having pressure and volume figures makes it easier to judge against other dryers, although brands measure in different ways.
Rated power is 1,600 W, with three speeds and four heat settings including a cold shot.
Heat control and hair types
A glass bead thermistor measures exit temperature 40 times every second, regulating heat to prevent extreme heat damage. Dyson describes the Origin as suitable for fine or thick, straight or wavy, curly or coily hair, and pitches it as a household dryer for everyone.
There is no Scalp protect mode or pause detect; those belong to the Supersonic Nural.
The styling concentrator in use
The included styling concentrator focuses airflow where you need it to remove frizz and smooth section by section. Dyson suggests pairing it with a round or paddle brush for a blowout, or using it alone for directed drying. Without a diffuser, curly hair owners would need to add one.
Weight is given as 640 g. The listing does not state cable length or noise. Anyone sharing the dryer across a household can treat the concentrator as the default head and add accessories later.
Thick hair and the alternatives
For thick hair, the Origin has less rated power than the Parlux Digitalyon at 2,400 W or the ghd Helios at 2,200 W, relying instead on pressure and airflow. The Parlux Alyon lists 84 m³/h at 2,250 W, which on paper is more airflow volume. The Dyson's appeal is a lighter body and precise heat control rather than maximum wattage.
Verdict
Choose this Supersonic Origin if you want an everyday Dyson with a concentrator and published motor specs, and do not need sensors. For very thick hair and the highest wattage, the Parlux Digitalyon or ghd Helios are stronger on paper, and for automatic scalp protection, look at the Supersonic Nural.
